UNSPECIFIED, FL – JULY 25. 2013: In this handout provided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Jeffrey Epstein poses for a sex offender mugshot after being charged with procuring a minor for prostitution on July 25, 2013 in Florida.

Ever since news of US billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s death broke, there have been questions about whether he committed suicide or was murdered.

The convicted sex offender and financier was arrested July 6 on suspicion of sex trafficking minors and was being held without bail awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy and sex trafficking.

According to The Washington Post, an autopsy report said Epstein sustained multiple breaks in his neck bones. This, the paper said, is according to two people familiar with the findings.

According to the sources, one of the bones was the hyoid bone which experts have said can occur in those who hang themselves but is more common in victims of strangulation.

Another source had said guards had not checked Epstein for “several” hours before he was found hanging in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, New York.

An autopsy done by the office of New York City’s chief medical examiner, Barbara Sampson listed Epstein’c cause of death as “pending”.

“In all forensic investigations, all information must be synthesized to determine the cause and manner of death. Everything must be consistent; no single finding can be evaluated in a vacuum,” Sampson said.

According to The Washington Post, people familiar with the autopsy said Sampson’s office is seeking additional information on Epstein’s condition in the hours before his death – footage from jail hallways, results of toxicology screenings, and interviews with guards and inmates near Epstein’s cell.

In 2008, three years after investigation began, Epstein was convicted by a Florida state court of soliciting a prostitute and of procuring an underage girl for prostitution. As part of a plea deal, Epstein served 13 months in custody with work releases.

Federal officials had identified 36 girls, some as young as 14 years old, who had been molested.

There have been conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death as people have said he may have been murdered to prevent him from spilling secrets of his rich and powerful friends.
