The senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial District in the Senate, Suleiman Hunkuyi, has asked security agencies to place some notable members of the All Progressives Congress on their watch list ahead of Saturday’s (today) state congresses of the party.
Amongst those listed are Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Alhaji Uba Sani; Commander of ‘Operation Yaki’, Col. Abubakar Soja (retd.), Acting Secretary of the APC in the state, Alhaji Yahaya Baba-Pate, Samaila Suleiman and Auwal Yaro Maikyau.
The senator described the chieftains of the party as dangerous for democracy in the state.
Hunkuyi stated this in a statement he signed in reaction to a warning handed down by a faction of the party to him and 38 other suspended members.
They were ordered by the state chapter to stay away from the congresses of the party scheduled to hold as from May 5, 2018.
Also, the faction loyal to the governor had on Monday raised the alarm that it had uncovered a plot meant to destabilise the party’s congresses across the state.
The Acting Secretary of the party in the state, Baba-Pate, allegedly accused Senator Hunkuyi of being the mastermind of the plot and subsequently barred him and others from the congresses.
However, Hunkuyi said they were the ones out to undermine democracy in the state.
“It is pertinently clear to all that they have perfected plans to undermine the democratic process, which guarantees the right of every member to aspire for any position and for them to have freedom of choice to determine who lead our party at the various levels,” he said.
On the recent attack by suspected thugs, the senator called on security agencies to investigate the series of attacks on his person, expressing concern over the way and manner thugs were used to harass and intimidate political opponents in the state.
He described the activities of suspected thugs in the state as barbaric.
He said, “You may also recall series of attacks on my person and that of my followers, mainly among which are the recent assassination attempts on my life and that of Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan and other people during the stakeholders’ meeting in the Central Senatorial Zone, held at the NUT Endwell Hotel, Kaduna on April 30, 2018, where several persons had various degrees of injury.
“I have been in politics in Kaduna for over 30 years; the recent style of barbarism and hooliganism and arming of young people with guns, daggers and other dangerous weapons to attack perceived political opponents is dangerous and alien to the people of the state.”
