ABA—Two kidnap victims identified as Ngene Raphael and Oliver Ogbonna, were yesterday rescued from a gang of gunmen by the Police in Aba, Abia State, following a distress call from residents of the city.
Police sources told Vanguard that Ogbonna and Raphael, who are staff of the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Aba, were abducted at Azikiwe road, Aba, with the former’s Lexus Jeep, with number plate, AA 998 CV. The gunmen fired sporadic shots through the Ngwa road area, forcing business owners to close shop.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, who mobilized several police patrol teams to block suspected escape routes, disclosed that the kidnappers were intercepted by the Counter Terrorist Police Unit stationed at the Orji Uzor Kalu Bridge area.
On sighting the CTU team on stop and search duty, the gunmen opened fire, but were overpowered by the Police. They abandoned a Toyota Sienna bus and their victims who were later rescued by the Police.
An AK 47 rifle No.2230 with 10 rounds of live ammunition and a Toyota Sienna van with number plate, SMK 768 CT, were recovered.
One of the gunmen who escaped with bullet wounds was later arrested by men of the Ndiegoro Police Division who went after them.
Abia Police spokesman, DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna, stated that one of the rescued victims, Raphael Ngene, sustained a bullet wound and is receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in Aba, while efforts are on to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.
